Willowbend

Property Description
Willowbend

This primarily forested wetland includes 1.8 miles on the Waccamaw River and is strategically located between two portions of Waccamaw River Heritage Preserve/Wildlife Management Area.  Protecting this tract helps fill in a large portion of this river corridor, and adds at least 2 oxbow lakes, river frontage, and loblolly pines. The forested wetland provides valuable filtration to maintain water quality in the adjacent river and its tributaries. Species of conservation concern known from the river corridor and nearby, comparable habitat and thus expected on site include at least 14 rare plants, 4 freshwater mussels, 4 fish, and 2 crayfish. Federally Threatened Wood Storks have been seen feeding on the property, and Native American artifacts have been found on the property over the years.  SCDNR plans to incorporate this parcel into Waccamaw River Heritage Preserve/Wildlife Management Area.
