Property Description
Soapstone Church is the center of Liberia, an African American community still living on land obtained after the Civil War with over five generations of families still present. Named after a large soapstone boulder on the property, the church sits at the crest of a hill along with an historic schoolhouse, a modern cemetery, and a historic slave cemetery, with spectacular views of Table Rock and the Blue Ridge Escarpment. Mable Owens Clarke, matriarch of Soapstone Church and the Liberia community, spent over 15 years holding monthly fish fries to raise the money to save the church and property.
