Hopewell Church Property

Property Description

The Hopewell Church Property in the Pageland Hopewellcommunity contains the battlefield for the Battle of Waxhaws (aka Buford's Massacre). The battle was fought between Continental Army troops from Virginia led by Colonel Abraham Buford and a British Loyalist force led by Lt. Colonel Banastre Tarleton. While the unique and significant history of the property is the overwhelmingly compelling reason for the preservation of the site, there are other important conservation goals of this project. The conservation of this tract preserves important green space on a busy intersections that is rapidly developing in Lancaster County. The public will have year-round unfettered access to the property. The SCBPT intends to establish the property as a public park to interpret the Battle of Waxhaws and allow passive recreational use of the site.
