Great Santee Swamp

This property is rich with fluvial berms, natural levee areas, and upland areas adjacent to swamp, bottomland, and wet forest creating numerous transitional zones and microhabitats where diversity thrives.  The site supports 116 priority wildlife species of conservation concern including 19 with federal or state listing status. Swamp-Forest Milkweed has also been documented, annually attracting a profusion of butterflies including Monarchs who lay their eggs exclusively on milkweeds. The southern boundary is tidally influenced by 2.75 miles of frontage along the Santee River.
