Waites Island

 Property Description
Waites Island

Waites Island in Horry County is the northernmost barrier island of the South Carolina Coast.  Approximately 1000-acres, Waites Island has long been a conservation priority of the State. It is the most significant undeveloped coastal fringe habitat in the 22 miles from Myrtle Beach to the North Carolina border and one of the last remaining undeveloped and unprotected barrier islands of this size in the southeastern US. SCDNR will acquire the subject 260-acre Waites-Olivia Boyce Abel from a cooperative conservation entity, Open Space Institute Land Trust, in June 2023 to create the Waites Island Heritage Preserve.
