Alewine Tract

Property Description

Alewine Tract

The Alewine property is 95.9 acres of pristine mountain lands which adjoins scenic Highway 11 with the Jocassee Gorges Wildlife Management Area. In addition to the high natural resources value of this property, it is a key acquisition from a public access standpoint. The current size of Jocassee Gorge is 33,430 acres, of which a significant portion are inaccessible to the public due to a lack of road access. This piece of property has allowed solid public access to 3000 acres of previously inaccessible lands. The Alewine lands have also provided space for a Department of Natural Resources workshed and storage facility, both of which assist DNR in their management of the park. The land is primarily older aged mixed hardwood forest with extensive river frontage. The acquisition of this land ensures protection of headwater seeps and streams of the Oolenoy River as well as providing excellent habitat for game species, fish and birds, resting and feeding areas for migratory species and critical habitat corridors.
